About North Lanarkshire Carers Together

Welcome to North Lanarkshire Carers Together

North Lanarkshire Carers Carers Together pledges to improve the lives of carers within North Lanarkshire by actively linking carers and professionals in meaningful working relationships. Our organisation is a registered charity working in partnership with North Lanarkshire Council, NHS Lanarkshire and a wide range of third sector and national organisations to influence policy development and service provision, which affect both carers and the people they care for.

Our History

During 1999, North Lanarkshire Council collaborated with various Carer groups to develop the North Lanarkshire Strategy for Carers. There was support then for the development of one organisation that could actively link Carers and professionals and enable the local authority to more effectively manage support to Carers. A budget was established for this purpose and a conference was held in Motherwell in November 2000 to explore, with Carers, the type of organisation they felt would best represent their views and interests. Over 200 Carers and professionals attended the first North Lanarkshire Carers’ conference.

From this conference a report called ‘The Way Forward’ was produced using only the comments of Carers present. Carers wanted an organisation that would:

  • Campaign locally and nationally
  • Speak out on their behalf
  • Review service provision
  • Link carers with appropriate and relevant resources
  • Collect and disseminate up to date information for the Carer community

In May 2001 North Lanarkshire Carers Together was duly formed and the constitution formally agreed, which included the establishment of a management board who would be responsible for the governance of the organisation. Charitable status was awarded in 2002 and a Development Manager and Administrator were appointed in 2003. The organisation was incorporated as a Private Limited Company in May 2005.

The organisation has developed significantly since 2001 including well developed strategic partnerships with North Lanarkshire Council, NHS Lanarkshire and the 3rd sector. North Lanarkshire Carers Together now employs 7 full time members of staff and has a Carer membership base in excess of 2’500 Carers; however our mission statement, commitment to Carers and organisational aims remain the same.
