About us…

OUR HISTORY

In the late 1990’s a group of like-minded carers, frustrated at a lack of support, campaigned locally and nationally for recognition and rights for all carers. This led to the formation of NLCT and we were constituted in early 2001.

Still governed and staffed by carers or former carers, we are now contracted by University Health and Social Care North Lanarkshire and North Lanarkshire Council to provide services to carers living in North Lanarkshire. We are the Information and Advice Service for carers and professionals, support short breaks (Carer Breather) through a Carer Support Network, and provide a Family Support Service for families where there is a child or young person in education who has an additional need for support.

Initial Contact Support

The staff team will usually be the first people you speak to when contacting us. We will provide a listening ear, understand the type of information, advice or service(s) you are looking for, and aim to provide this in a way that you can understand and ensure it is of value to your needs.

Our dedicated Information & Engagement Team will look after you at a time which carers often describe as difficult when reaching out for support. Carers from all groups are welcome to NLCT, including rural, ethnic minority and LGBTQIA+ carers.

OUR VISION

We see North Lanarkshire as the place where the contribution of unpaid carers is fully recognised. Carers are equal partners in care, are fully supported with access to their rights, and lead lives that are fulfilling and meaningful alongside their caring role.

Our Mission…

Our mission is to drive positive change by putting carers at the heart of our work, partnering with statutory and other organisations to enhance services, and representing carers to decision-makers. We provide information, advice, and support to ensure carers are well-equipped and informed about their rights under the Carers (Scotland) Act 2016. We are committed to an inclusive agenda that ensures equitable access for all carers, taking a whole-family approach and improving professionals’ understanding of carers’ roles and rights.
