Neurodevelopmental Family Support

North Lanarkshire Council: Education & Families have commissioned North Lanarkshire Carers Together to deliver a Family Support Service to support parent carers and their child or young person living at home who has a need for additional support.

Emotional and Practical Support
Neurodevelopmental Family Support

There are three main pillars which underpin all policy and legislation that relates to children, young people and families in Scotland. These are:

Neurodevelopmental Child and Backpack

Focused support…

The family support is tailored to meet the needs of each individual family, and this is aligned with the Ten Principles of Intensive Family Support within The Promise as well as the child/young person’s Wellbeing Plan and underpinned by UNCRC Children’s Rights.

Families can access the service with a referral from the child/young person’s school or early years establishment following the child’s wellbeing meeting, a referral from the Neurodevelopmental Service or from CAMHS. The family will then be contacted by one of our Family Support Workers to discuss the referral further and look at what focused support can be provided.

We are unable to accept self-referrals.

Focused support for families will be based around the need of each individual family but may include:

FOR PARENT CARERS

  • Emotional and practical support around strategies
  • Psychoeducation and support to understand the child or young person’s profile
  • Support to engage with peer support groups and other appropriate services
  • Information and advice on carer rights and where to access other support

FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

  • LIAM (Let’s Introduce Anxiety Management)
  • Talking Mats
  • Emotional Wellbeing
  • Understanding their diagnosis

The Family Support Service is in great demand and referrals may have to go onto a waiting list. During this time, you will receive a welcome pack from the Carer Information and Engagement Team and an invitation to discuss your caring role and wider supports available to you. Taking this support is optional and does not affect your access to the family support service.

What families say…

Young people from North Lanarkshire Youth Council (NLYC) helped to gather stories and present user-friendly information about the work of the Children’s Services Partnership. The following video, presented by the NLYC representative for Coatbridge discusses our service and is from the suite of videos produced.

“From our initial contact with the family support service, I felt listened too, understood and felt the team were willing to help and make adjustments to support our family!”

PARENT A

“Thank you so much, you are the first person not to judge me. I really appreciate it.”

PARENT B

“She really liked you today and said she preferred you to another worker as you didn’t just talk about the stuff that makes her sad, you also spoke about fun stuff too!”

YOUNG PERSON A

“I didn’t think I’d want to meet you or it would be good, but it’s actually been alright”

YOUNG PERSON B

“I have said before, of all the agencies and third parties we use, I most appreciate your support, and I know the parents and children do too.”
